Kids love to experiment and explore the world around them.  Using scientific concepts related to energy, moment of inertia, and air flow, this training will teach school age teachers how to implement several activities into lesson plans.  Each activity will encourage children to use the scientific method to make predictions and observe outcomes about how things go.

ECE 204: Authentic Assessment for Early Childhood: Planning Learning Experiences (2 hours)

Welcome to Authentic Assessment for Early Childhood: Planning Learning Experiences!

This training will help you gain skills in understanding the importance of authentic assessment and how you can use the information you gather in a variety of ways.  This training does not focus on a specific assessment tool but gives you a solid background in assessment so that you can use the tools you already have or choose a tool in the future. 

When you return to the workplace you will be able to explore the assessment tool that is used in your workplace, practice strategies learned to gather more information about children, and apply assessment in lesson planning.

Satisfactory completion of an application activity will be required before receiving completion credit.

This course is a follow-up to ECE 203 Authentic Assessment for Early Childhood: An Introduction. You must complete that course before beginning this one.

Important Information

This course requires the successful completion of an application activity before completion of the course.
The application activity will be reviewed by the course facilitator and feedback will be provided within 3 working days of submission.

SCCC 117: Budgeting

Learning Objectives:
You will learn the steps to preparing a budget that will guide you to meaningful financial
decisions, including how to:
·       Develop the assumptions you need for your operating budget
·       Calculate operating revenue and expense budgets
·       Review your budget to make sure it meets your targets
·       Monitor your budget throughout the year
 
Course Significance:
Having learned the importance of maintaining an operating surplus, how can you make sure your organization does that? The most common (and successful) way to do that is with a meaningful operating budget. This course will demonstrate the proper way to develop budgets that can be used throughout the year to guide the operating decisions in your organization.

SCCC 126: Nutrition Labels

Learning Objectives:
At the end of the course, you will be able to:
·       Read Nutrition Facts labels to understand the properties of that food
·       Determine the recommended serving of a food item
·       Identify the number of calories in a single serving
·       Determine the ingredients in a food item
·       Interpret the info in order to select products higher in protein, calcium and vitamin D
·       Interpret the info in order to select products lower in sodium, saturated fat & added sugars
 
Course Significance:
This course will help you understand and interpret the information on the Nutrition Facts labels on food items. It will also give you some tips for improving the nutrition of the seniors you serve, to help them increase the amounts of nutrients they frequently under-consume and limit the amounts of nutrients they often over-consume.

ECE 501: Inclusive Communication in Early Childhood Education

How directors communicate with current and potential employees, families, and children is vital to promoting an inclusive environment.  How we communicate can either exclude or include individuals.  Inclusive communication includes both verbal and written communication.  During this training, you will learn more about what inclusive communication is, strategies to support inclusive communication in meetings, documents, and when working with teachers and families.  Participants will create a goal of how they will implement inclusive communication in their program. 

This course will take approximately 1.5 hours to complete and can be stopped and started as needed.

The course is designed for new staff and board members of organizations that provide home-delivered meals, commonly known as “Meals on Wheels.”  It shines a spotlight on the unique aspects of home-delivered meal programs. This course will help you to identify your organization’s place in the community and find your own place within the organization.

Learning Objectives:
At the end of the course, you will be able to:
·       Briefly describe what senior centers are
·       Explain the difference between senior centers and other types of senior services
·       Describe the types of services offered at senior centers
·       Recognize the key funding sources and regulations
·       Describe some of the best practices of well-run programs
 
Course Significance:
The course is designed for new staff and board members of organizations that operate senior centers. You will be introduced to the important role of senior centers in the United States. This course will help you to identify your senior center’s place in the community.

SCCC 123: It’s All About Nutrition

Learning Objectives:
At the end of the course, you will be able to:
·       Recognize malnutrition from undernutrition and over-nutrition
·       Describe how menus can be improved by the addition of nutrient dense foods
·       Describe why menu planning is particularly important for people with diabetes
·       Recognize how meals can be modified to improve the nutrition of people with dysphagia
(swallowing disorders)
 
Course Significance:
This course will help you understand the role of the meals your program provides in helping prevent and improve chronic conditions that are common in the seniors your program serves.

SCCC 124: Vitamin D & Calcium

Learning Objectives:
At the end of the course, you will be able to:
·       Briefly describe the role of Vitamin D and Calcium in the diet
·       Calculate the daily Vitamin D and Calcium requirements for your clients
·       List the types of foods that are good sources of Vitamin D and Calcium
 
Course Significance:
This course will help you understand the importance of Vitamin D and Calcium in seniors’ diets. It will also help you to know how to best provide Vitamin D and Calcium in the meals you serve.

SCCC 125: Protein

Learning Objectives:
At the end of the course, you will be able to:
·       Briefly describe the role of protein in the diet
·       Calculate the daily protein requirements for your clients
·       List the types of foods that are good sources of protein
 
Course Significance:
This course will help you understand the importance of Protein in seniors’ diets. It will also help you to know how to best provide Protein in the meals you serve.
