A third variable related to post-school success is performing activities of daily living well.
This is an important indicator of preparedness for independent living and the ability to care for oneself.
46% of all youth with disabilities were reported to be able to perform activities of daily living well, but only
• 25% of students with intellectual disabilities could do so
• Only 20% of students with multiple disabilities could
• And only 17% of students with autism could perform activities of daily living well.
Two important questions arise here:
First, what can we do to ensure that youth with intellectual and developmental disabilities are prepared to function as independently as possible? How do we augment the core curriculum to ensure that students obtain these skills?
And, equally important, how can we increase parent and family expectations for future independent living for their son or daughter?
