Thanks for Visiting Disasterville Again

Carrie: “Well Terrye, you’ve done it. Six visits to Disasterville!!! We’ve talked about the American emergency management “system of systems,” and emergency planning at the local level. You’ve explored the Prepared4ALL process. You’ve seen examples of Prepared4ALL in action. We talked about planning for a COVID-19 testing site and Emergency Dispensing Site for COVID-19 vaccines. We’ve talked about “whole community” planning and the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Under Title II of the ADA, it is the legal obligation of counties, cities, and towns to provide equal access to and inclusion and equity in local emergency services, including COVID-19 testing and vaccines. Involving people with disabilities in the planning process and ongoing planning is the best way to achieve access, equity and inclusion.”

EM: “We reviewed the “functional and access needs” concept and the “C-MIST” framework which is a way of thinking about functional and access needs. We’ve also talked about topics that emergency and public health preparedness planners may not know, such as disability demographics and the negative impacts of pandemics and disasters on people with disabilities. Planners may not understand how to make meetings physical and programmatically accessible, or how to make communications accessible and inclusive.”

PJ: “You’re ready to return to Tornado Gap and use the Prepared4ALL process to develop a coalition of organizations to collaborate with the local emergency and public health preparedness planners. You know you’re welcome back any time for a review of what you’ve learned here.

“Job well done!”

Carrie: “Before you go home, Terrye, there are a few things you need to do.”
