Mr. Brown

It’s
just that we had no idea that our baby would not be healthy and normal.  This is coming out of nowhere for us, and I
don’t know if we are able to handle all of this.

Dr. Young

(Pausing
and watching the parents).  I know this
is unexpected.  How are you feeling with
the information we discussed?

Mrs. Brown

I
feel like everything has turned upside down. You know, you just don’t expect
these things to happen to you. Will you let us know as soon as you have the
results?

Dr. Young

Of
course I will; but for now I just want you to rest and regain your strength for
you and Craig. 

Dr. Young

(turning
to Mr. Brown):  What about you, Mr.
Brown?  What are you feeling – this is
often very difficult for fathers.

Mr. Brown

I’m
kind of numb. I don’t know what I am feeling, to be truthful.  This is really going to take time to sink
in.  Are you sure he has Down syndrome?

Dr. Young

Not
100%, but as I said, I strongly suspect it, given Craig’s physical
characteristics. I will be back tomorrow to check on how each of you are doing
and to answer any further questions.  Is
there anything else that I can answer now?

Mr. Brown

I am sure we will have many questions, Dr. Young.  Thank you for taking this time and listening – we just need to absorb what all of this means for Craig and our family.
