Lesson 7: Using Core Word Walls or Core Posters

Using Core Word Walls or Core Posters

Example of a Core poster.

Using a core word wall chart or poster in the classroom provides a consistent, visual language model that supports communication for all students throughout the day. When placed in a central, accessible location, the chart allows teachers, SLPs, paraprofessionals, and related service providers to easily point to and model core words such as go, help, more, want, look, and stop during instruction, routines, and transitions. A core word wall reinforces shared language across activities, supports students who use AAC as well as emerging communicators, and promotes independence by making high-frequency words visually available at all times. Regularly modeling and referencing the chart helps normalize AAC use, increases language exposure, and embeds communication into everyday classroom interactions rather than limiting it to structured teaching moments.

Tina

Tina references the core word wall during instructions and routines, reinforcing that it’s a shared classroom tool. While she’s using the core word wall, Tina is pointing to the word while speaking, supporting all students.
