Lesson 5: Integtated Related Services

Integrated related services mean that speech, occupational therapy, physical therapy, and other supports are embedded within the classroom and daily routines, rather than occurring only in isolated pullout sessions.

When AAC and core vocabulary are part of this integrated model, communication support becomes consistent, functional, and meaningful across settings.

Why Integration Matters

  • Students experience communication support throughout the entire day.
  • Core vocabulary becomes meaningful because it is used in real contexts.
  • Therapists, teachers, paraprofessionals, and peers reinforce the same language goals.
  • Families can more easily carry strategies over into home routines.

In this lesson, we’ll examine ways that core vocabulary and AAC can be integrated throughout the day and how communication can be supported by service providers, peers, and family members.
