Person Centered Systems:

Note: The video below was made in New Hampshire, but its content is relevant to any state.

Scenario:

Two women sitting on a couch looking at a computer.

Our own beliefs about what someone “can” or “should” do must never outweigh what they say they want for their life. Aiza and her sister have lived together for over 20 years, ever since her brother-in-law passed away. Aiza has intellectual and mobility disabilities, and her sister is her primary support. Their relationship is strong, and her sister has always played a key role in helping Aiza stay safe and connected.

Last year, Aiza wanted to take a trip with other friends she met at a community event for (aging people with disabilities). Her sister was hesitant, worried that the environment might not meet Aiza’s needs, and unsure whether she would be comfortable away from home.

Even with the concerns in mind, Aiza signed up for the trip anyway. With proper support in place and a trusted guide, she experienced the Grand Canyon, something she had dreamed of but was often told might not be possible.

When Aiza returned home, she was all smiles. The trip helped her build confidence, deepen friendships, and strengthen her voice in decisions about her own life — a reminder that independence and growth often occur when we are supported in taking risks.
