Topic 2: Touchpoints of the Individual – Person-Centered vs. System-Centered Approaches

Person-centered planning focuses on the unique goals, preferences, and strengths of the individual, ensuring that their voice guides decisions about their care and future. In contrast, system-centered planning prioritizes organizational rules, policies, and efficiency, often limiting personal choice.

So often we take a look at what services are available through a certain program or funding source and try to figure out how to make the person and their life fit into a menu of services. System-centered planning places the services available first, and the wants and needs of the person second.

Person-centered planning is when we first get to know someone and listen to what they want and need in their life, then figure out how to help them get there. It may include using some of the available services. It may also involve the creativity of people in the person’s life who can help find other ways to help the person get what they want and need. Person-centered planning makes sure that the person is always first and that they are never forced into a life driven by specific services and other people’s ideas about what their life should look like.
