Topic 1.1: Discovering children’s uniqueness in the program and home

As an early care and education professional, you need to look beyond a child’s disability or label and get to know her/him as a person. The disability is only part of their uniqueness, not who they are. You must look, listen, and learn what makes them unique and find ways to bring those attributes out. To do this, you must discover their uniqueness and then affirm and validate them.

It is apparent to everyone, including children, that we are all different. Therefore, children need to understand that being unique is a good thing and should be celebrated and embraced. Children who understand this have more confidence in themselves are more empathic to themselves and others.

The following sections will provide a few example activities, books, and affirming statements to help you, the child, and their families begin this journey.
