Dr. Young
What seems to be the problem? Could you tell me a little more about his nursing?
Mrs. Brown
He seems to be having more trouble latching onto my breast than my other two children did. I don’t think he nurses for as long a period of time, either.
Dr. Young
First, we can help you with the breastfeeding. I will ask our lactation specialist here at the hospital to assist you. Craig’s difficulty with breastfeeding is due to his overall low muscle tone, and some other things that I see in him, and that is what I want to talk with you about.
?Decision Point: What would you say next?
Reflect for a minute on what you would say next, then check your answer against the suggestion below.
Suggested Response
Dr. Young: “I have examined Craig and he seems to have some of the physical characteristics of Down syndrome and I suspect that he may have this. I am not absolutely sure at this point, but want to do some chromosomal tests to be sure. (PAUSES)
Have you heard of Down syndrome?”
