Dr. Young
Craig is eligible under our state’s infant/toddler program for services. My office can give you the referral information on how to contact that program. Craig can get early intervention help, including speech/language therapy, physical therapy, and things like that. Generally, the earlier we start, the better it is for the child.
Mrs. Brown
Yes, please give us the information.
Dr. Young
It is important that we can get Craig started in early intervention right away. Everyday we are learning new things about how to work with children with a variety of problems. I know that Craig will do very well with these services. I want you to know that you can call me at anytime you have a question.
Mr. Brown
Thanks, doctor! I am sure we will – this is all so new to us. We really appreciate your caring.
Dr. Young
How are things going at home with your other two children? Are the girls adjusting to their new baby brother?
Mrs. Brown
They are absolutely thrilled to have a baby brother and are always wanting to help. Sarah, my three year old, is very much the little mother. I was afraid she would be jealous of no longer being the baby. Laurie, our five year old, tells everyone at last she has a baby brother!
Dr. Young
It is wonderful that Craig has two older sisters who are so interested in him. He will learn so much from them. Remember to treat him as normally as you treated your other children. There are also books available for siblings of children with Down syndrome to help them understand the special needs of their brother or sister.
Dr. Young
Any other problems with caring for Craig at home?
Mrs. Brown
None that I can think of.
Dr. Young
He certainly seems like a happy baby!
Mrs. Brown
He seems to be doing fine in that department! If I could just get him to sleep more than two hours at a time!
Resource
The free downloadable book, “Welcoming a Newborn with Down Syndrome” also has suggestions for ways you can teach siblings about Down syndrome and resources you can use as they start to have questions over time. The book also has suggestions for how you can inform friends and family.
