What About Informing Relatives Copy

Dr. Young
If Craig does have Down syndrome as we suspect, you could, tell them that Craig is just as much your child as are your two daughters, that you love him for who he is, and that each child is different. I can already see a lot of both of you in him. In time, they will come to see his unique abilities – he will win them over.
I would also be glad to meet with your relatives or make a phone call, if you think that would help. Remember that they still think of you as their child, and are concerned for your well-being. That’s a very natural feeling on their part.
I do think it is important though that you should tell them that they should not say anything to the girls right now because you will want to tell them.
Mrs. Brown
Oh my, what are we going to tell our daughters? You know, they are five and three and are both very much looking forward to their baby brother.
?Decision Point: What would you say next?
Reflect for a minute on what you would say next, then check your answer against the suggestion below.
Suggested Response
Doctor: I would not tell them that there is anything different about Craig, at least for now. Craig is their new baby brother, let them mother him and enjoy him. They will not notice anything different.
