If you want to have a transcervical CVS, we will need to decide that very quickly, because it would have to be done within the week. If you want to wait for a transabdominal CVS or an amnio, you have more time to consider what you want to do.

Mr. Abbott:

Are there any advantages to having the transcervical CVS right away? Didn’t you say it was riskier?

Dr. Thomas:

CVS carries slightly greater risks to the fetus than an amnio. The advantage of CVS is that if we do discover Down syndrome, you and your wife have that knowledge earlier, and that can be helpful in considering the options for your pregnancy.

Mrs. Abbott:

Thank you, doctor, we will discuss this, and get back with you tomorrow about the CVS. I think if I do have the CVS, I would like to have the cervical kind. Would it be too late to schedule that?
